International cardiac surgeons to visit Illawarra
Dec 06, 2024
The Illawarra region will this weekend play host to leading cardiac and vascular surgeons from around the country, as well as international specialists from the US, UK and New Zealand.
The Aorta Illawarra Symposium, presented by Wollongong Private Hospital and The Cardiac Centre NSW, is a collaborative education event offering health care professionals the chance to hear from some of the best in the business when it comes to heart health.
Local interventional cardiologist, Dr Ed Danson, said the weekend would delve into treatment options, research and management of cardiac concerns, specifically related to the aorta – the main and largest artery in the human body - and the aortic valve.
“The aim of this symposium is to bring together a range of specialists treating patients with disease of the aorta and aortic valve. It sounds rather niche, but the reality is these are relatively common in our community,” Dr Danson said.
“Diseases of the aorta and aortic valve are very serious and potentially life threatening, and early detection is important.
“Luckily for locals, we have some of the most skilled cardiac and vascular surgeons and cardiologists right here in our region, with Wollongong rapidly becoming a hub and centre of excellence for managing diseases of the aorta. It is because of this that we hope to share our experiences and provide education to those who attend, for the benefit of current and future patients.”
Wollongong Private Hospital cardiothoracic surgeon, Professor Adam El-Gamel, said the conference would benefit healthcare professionals, patients, and the community at large.
“This weekend offers a platform for health care professionals to exchange the latest research findings, techniques, and advancements in cardiac surgery. This will help to enhance the skills and knowledge of local surgeons and medical staff, and also hopefully entice new cardiac specialists to the region,” Professor El-Gamel said.
“Attendees will engage in workshops, panel discussions, and lectures that focus on new surgical techniques, patient management strategies, and innovations in cardiac care. Longer term, we hope this will contribute to improved health outcomes for local patients.”
Speakers at the event include the scientific lead for structural heart disease from the United States, Dr Toby Rogers and cardiothoracic surgeons, Dr Vinnie Bapat (USA) and Dr Conal Austin (UK).
Aorta Illawarra is designed for cardiovascular professionals including consultant cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons, physicians, anaesthetists, fellows and advanced trainees.
