Who is appropriate to refer
Referrals are appropriate for patients with private health insurance where there is suspected or confirmed lung cancer, including where the optimal referral pathway or specialty is unclear.
This may include patients with:
- Abnormal lung imaging (e.g. pulmonary nodules, masses or incidental findings)
- Symptoms concerning for lung malignancy
- A new diagnosis of lung cancer requiring staging or treatment planning
- Complex cases where guidance is needed on investigation or specialist allocation
- Eligible patients identified through lung cancer screening where further assessment is required
Where it is not clear which specialist is most appropriate, GPs are encouraged to refer directly to the Lung Clinic. Referrals will be triaged centrally and directed to the appropriate specialist or diagnostic pathway.
